Science In U.S. Schools

The 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress has said that fewer than half of the nation is proficient in science and technology and even fewer are planning a future career of it. A director of the New York Hall of Science, who is also a board member that oversees the test, knows that if something doesn t change, our technological future is in jeopardy. In a time where technology is constantly advancing and every month new products are coming out on the market and new educational technology tools are being invented everyday, it s important to keep this pace. In Japan, they are light-years ahead of the United States in the technological field and if we don t start getting students interested in pursuing careers in these fields, our nation will suffer.

The children are our future, if we keep the schools technology at a standstill and keep creating excuses on why not to add educational technology into the classrooms and school districts; the students wont see a need to pursue these types of careers in science and technology. If a school has a lot of educational technology implemented in their curriculums, students will be able to use these devices on a daily basis and have a drive to create better devices or in general like the technology so much that they want to make a career out of it.

The easiest way to get students interested in a career is implementing it into their everyday lives. It s important to give them exciting devices to play with and learn from. When their classes seem to be getting more organized because of these devices and their grades start to go up students will realize how important the technology is and how it is changing their lives. When a student sees first hand how a technological device or educational technology improves their school performance, they will see the need to improve future devices and constantly think up ways to improve the devices they are using.

If we are going to keep up with the rest of the world technology wise, the United States needs to implement more technology into the classrooms. What s holding schools back currently is the cost. Schools know first hand that by implementing educational technology devices into the classrooms the students will get better test scores and have a more organized educational career. It s so important also to incorporate this educational technology into the classrooms because it will get students interested in this technology, then when a school hosts a science and technology fair, students will be more apt to want to attend and maybe even participate in the event.

If we don t start implementing this technology, regardless if the cost is to schools, it will greatly hinder the United States and how our technology is if we don t start implementing technology into the classrooms. Students need to learn hands on what benefits they can receive from the educational technology and by getting students interested in it, more students will want to make a career out of it.
