Viruses are the most common food poisoning cause. It has different subtypes which trigger different symptoms. Below are some of them:

?Norovirus – This type of virus can cause a mild illness also known as “stomach flu”. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, headache, low-grade fever and abdominal pain. Thus, these symptoms may resolve in two to three days time.

Norovirus is usually transmitted from shellfish, water, vegetables that are contaminated with feces and even from person to person. In densely populated areas, outbreaks of this type are common. This includes schools, nursing homes and even cruise ships. This is also why it is termed “cruise ship illness”.

?Rotavirus – This type of virus can cause moderate to severe conditions. Vomiting is usual and it is even followed by watery diarrhea as well as fever. This type is common in children and infants. It can be transmitted from person to person through fecal food contamination as well as shared play areas.

?Hepatitis A – This type of virus results to moderate illness accompanied by a sudden onset of fever, abdominal pain, loss of appetite and feeling tried as well as jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). The symptoms may last for less than two months. They may also prolong or relapse up to 6 months. This type can be transmitted from person to person via fecal food contamination.

Bacteria is another known cause of food poisoning. It can affect a person in two ways. It can infect the intestines and cause inflammation as well as difficulty in absorbing water and nutrients – resulting to diarrhea. Other types of bacteria can produce chemicals in foods like toxins which can be poisonous to the digestive system of humans. If you will consume them, they can cause vomiting, nausea, kidney failure and even death. Below are some types of bacteria:

?Campylobacter – This type of bacteria causes mild illness along with watery diarrhea, fever, muscle aches and headaches. It is food-borne and transmitted by raw milk, poultry and water that is contaminated by animal feces.

?Salmonellae – This type of bacteria can cause moderate illness that is associated with vomiting, nausea, headache and crampy diarrhea. After a few weeks, it can result to arthritis. For people with HIV/AIDS and those who are getting chemotherapy due an impaired or weak immune system, it can be life threatening. This illness can be transmitted by undercooked foods such as dairy products, poultry and seafood among others.

?Staphylococcus aureus – This type of bacteria can cause moderate to severe illness. It is accompanied with a rapid onset of severe vomiting, nausea, dizziness and even abdominal cramping. It can produce toxin n foods like salads, cream-filled pies and cakes and dairy products among others.

?Bacillus cereus – This type of bacteria can cause mild illness. It comes with a rapid onset of vomiting either with or without abdominal cramping and diarrhea. It is usually transmitted through starchy foods and rice. Scientists are saying that this type of bacteria can be used as a powerful terrorist weapon.

?Other types are: E coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Shigella, botulism, vibrio parahaemouticus and vibrio cholera.

Parasites also cause food poisoning but they are very rare. Some examples are: cryptosporidium and giardia. There are also toxic agents that cause food poisoning such as mushrooms and more.
